Thoughts on Ab Aeterno Ep.9:
OMFG : Oh My Freakin’ Eyeliner! What an episode that was, I’ve waited 6 years for this and I wasn’t disappointed.
“Ab Aeterno” was so different than what I thought it was going to be, that I couldn’t make sense of anything that was going on initially. When the HELL reference came up, I was like OH NO! PLEASE NO! You Can’t Do This To Me! Not The Purgatory theory, anything but that, You Fuckers! Luckily, It was just the writers Fucking with our heads again with a huge nod to the Purgatory theorists out there that have driven us mad for all these years, and putting the theory dead and buried once and for all.  Phew , what a Relief, nice touch Darlton, but you had me going for a bit.
When I finally calmed down, my faith was regained and before I knew it, I was balling my eyes out again and totally full of the most amazing warm, fuzzy, fluffy, good feelings that Lost rewards me in it’s best episodes and this was surely one of those.
Points in Brief:
When RA killed the Doctor, it reminded me of Des accidentally killing Kelvin! Some of Richard’s details were just like Desmond’s details, the boat journey on a stormy night, running for the Doc, pushing a man who hits his head/killing him, Epic Love story. Both men responsible for keeping the Cork in the bottle of the Island. That’s not coincidence.
Jacob cannot absolve RA of his sins but he can grant him eternal life? So Jacob isn’t God (even though he talks like he is) but more like a Prophet or a messenger from God or just a ‘being’ on the side of Good that is trying to prevent Evil taking over the world.
- Luke 4:24: “And he said, Verily I say unto you, ‘No prophet is accepted in his own country.”
Although a very religious episode, I’m still not convinced it is simply God Vs Devil in a biblical sense, but more about the general Good Vs Evil within the universe and I still think that these manifestations of Good and Evil are not of this world.
We find out that if Jacob is stabbed through the chest before he speaks a word then he can be killed just like Dogen said about MIB, but Jacob did speak before Ben killed him??? I’m still confused by this so called loophole, we still do not know the Rules here.
“It’s the devil!” he cries, as a giant wave takes the Black Rock and hurls it directly into the head of the statue. Tsunami size waves and violent storms courtesy of Jacob was what brought the Black Rock to the middle of the Island. OK, but i still prefer my theory that the Island re-materialised under the Black Rock during a Frozen Donkey Wheel moment, oh well, never mind.
What if Jacob brought the Black Rock to the Island, but it was MIB who smashed it against Tawaret, Jacob’s Home to say “You want it? HERE!” and shoving the ship down Jacob’s throat as a big Fuck You!
I remember Walt could also control the weather and stop/start the rain just like Jacob appears to do, which gets me thinking again about the Energy in the Island. Jacob uses it, MIB abuses it and Walt is the only other person I know that can somehow manipulate it, no wonder the Others were scared of him and sent him packing. Walt the Island’s Energy Force needs you.
RA “If you don’t, he will.” This was a key moment in Lost history when Jacob finally realised his errors over hundreds or thousands of years of civilisations and offers RA a role of intermediary between himself and those he brings to the Island.
Jacob was shocked that MIB, after all this time, actually tried to kill him, then everything changed and Jacob’s new approach set the scene for the story that is Lost.
Why did both Dogen and The Man in Black give almost the exact same speech when handing out assassination assignments? It must be in the ‘Rules’
Shit, Jacob is a badass when he wants to be, shame he didn’t use those moves on Ben.
“Still think your dead? Still think they are all dead?” No FFS of course they aren’t dead, it’s just what the Devil wants you to think.
Ricardo only chose to live forever so that he wouldn’t as he thought  go to HELL.
The ‘CORK’ keeping evil in was the big reveal here and I go into more detail here: “The Cork”  But the interesting thing is that evil still exists in the outside world. It’s not as though by keeping MIB trapped on the Island, the world is free from evil. It still exists. But I guess this is part of the whole “balance” theme of Lost.
Full of religious symbolism. Baptizing Richard by dunking his head under water three times until he decided he wanted to live, having “communion” with him by sharing wine, and giving him eternal life in return for serving him.
Jacob can die, but How do you kill the devil? How do you destroy evil?
Why was Jacob wearing gloves when he went to see Ilana, why shouldn’t Ilana be touched by Jacob?
Why did Jacob and MIB’s eye colour keep changing from brown to blue over and over?
Looks like Sun got a new line this episode. Yay!, atleast she gets an episode to herself with Jin next week.
If both MIB and Jacob have the same energy force which enables them to manifest themselves into any character throughout the history of the show, that has HUGE implications and makes me want to re-watch every single weird encounter that has ever happened.
What was with the Blue Butterfly significance? Was that MIB or Jacob or God or another form of Island Energy Manifestation?
“All you need is love. Love is all you need.”
Richard’s love for Isabella. Claire’s love for Aaron. Sayid’s love for Nadia. Sawyer’s love for Juliet/Kate. Jin’s love for Sun. So on and so forth. Love is pure, love is good, love is an expression of God and where there is a good story of Love, The Devil is kept at bay. This Love aspect was demonstrated beautifully in this episode with Ricardo and Isabella, when he lost his loved one and all hope, he was tilting towards the dark side with the help of MIB’s dirty trickery, when his faith in his Love was returned, and he realised the truth that she will always be with him whatever, he chose the light.
It was Interesting how Isabella’s manifestation by MIB was at the same time as Smokey outside, haven’t seen that before, or have we???
MIB even made it look like Smokey killed Isabella even tho they are one and the same, MIB, maybe some manifestations are actually created by the Losties on the Island in their own minds the energy can manifest real memories, like Walt did, i’m still not exactly clear on WTF is smokey. Seconds before RA was going to join Team fLocke, Hurley turns up to save the day and point RA back to the light side.
The biggest question however is did we really see Isabella speaking to her husband? Or did we see Jacob’s own version of Isabella, strategically placed there to sway Richard back to his own team? Personally I want to believe that there was no trickery going on there, it was real, as real as like a scene from Ghost with Patrick Swayse and Demi Moore that is.
Hurley now has his purpose, he really can talk to dead people to find out the truth when it matters, so people will not be swayed to the dark side by the lies and trickery of fLocke.
On a side note, Jacob is also able to manifest himself into visions of dead people on and off the Island, whereas MIB is restricted to just the Island, for now.
E.g. Charlie at the Mental Institute talking sense into Hurley could have been Jacob, Off Island Dave, Christian Shephard visions to Jack in the real world were almost definitely Jacob as I theorised before, not all manifestations of characters have been MIB, some have been Jacob also and sometimes the same characters are manifested by both MIB and Jacob, such as Christian Shephard and possibly Isabella in this episode, except this time it was different for the very first time, it was a very spiritual angel like image of Isabella, and RA couldn’t actually see her, this is what makes this example authentic.
I prefer to think it was a real spiritual encounter, no trickery involved and Hurley really can talk to the dead, which makes him more like another one of God’s prophets.
Wild Boar - Now that just ain’t Kosher is it!
This whole wild boar thing freaked me out a bit. Sawyers old enemy that haunted him way back when makes another appearance on the Black Rock eating the human remains of the crew. Here is where it gets freaky: The Boar is eating human remains, then MIB feeds the same boar to Ricardo, hence Ricardo is actually eating his crew mates, it’s like cannibalism.
The Old testament did say that it was forbidden to eat Pig, it was against ‘The Rules’ It just ain’t  Kosher and it was so wrong.
It reminds me of Locke & fLocke feeding wild boar to the losties and Sawyer & the Boar story, and looking at it from a very different angle now.
Only the Devil himself would be this sick, it looks like he thinks eating is primitive and disgusting when watching Ricardo eat the boar, like he feeds on pure energy from the Island and anything less is primitive.
Jacob made a point of eating the fish and sharing it with MIB making a symbolic point that he is at one with the humans, MIB clearly isn’t.
* n.b.  We don’t see MIB eat or drink, we only see Jacob with food/drink. Very Symbolic.
The Season 1 & Season 6 Similarities are more and more prominent, my instincts to the characters in Season 1 are now manifesting themselves in Season 6.
e.g.. Locke’s encounter with Smokey was like he was possessed by the monster in S1, now he’s a manifestation of Smokey. Claire was always crazy, Sayid was always going to end up as a senseless version of Evil Incarnate, Kate would always end up with Sawyer, Jack was always the leader the candidate and was clearly headed towards a big showdown with Locke. Walt the gifted child, the key with the ability to open the door to the limitless secret energy in the Island and control it, ooops we haven’t got there yet have we.
In Darlton’s Official podcast the bad twins tell us:
We haven’t yet seen Jacob manifest himself, but Kate’s horse isn’t MIB, hmm, they are saving Jacob’s power back from us.
Waves: More waves & violent storms: More of Jacob’s power with water and the weather, the elements. Storms can be very sudden and powerful, just like the one that carried the Black Rock and we will be seeing more storms. (I’ll add that to my Water theory)
Des is coming back soon, shocker!
The Finale will be called “The End” - What else could it possibly be?
They also tease again if MIB is actually Evil… Well I suppose if MIB isn’t actually the Devil but some Alien from the darkest corners of the Universe abusing and using the secret energy forces of the universe, then imprisoned on Earth on the Island, then he could be just one very pissed off Extra Terrestrial who just wants to go home and that would mean that Walt’s comic book was true all along.
Namaste & Good Luck!
