The Cork:

Because if it did, it would spread. The cork is this island. And it’s the only thing keeping the darkness where it belongs.” - Jacob (6x09: Ab Aeterno)
The ‘CORK’ was the big reveal here, finally we get an explanation to What is the Island? Interestingly in the Season 3 extras, the ‘Cork’ analogy was used by Darlton to explain containing the Electromagnetic Energy and Exotic matter in the heart of the Island in the Swan station. Now they are using the very same ‘Cork’ analogy to explain what the Island is containing the ‘Evil’ energy.
They are one and the same…. In a spiritual and religious sense the Evil Energy needs to be corked to prevent it from being released into the real world, in a Scientific & Dharma sense, this very same Evil Energy can be explained in scientific terms as an Electromagnetic Anomaly and Mysterious Exotic Matter which was released when Dharma drilled into the Island and caused the Incident and had to build the Swan to control the devastating affects of releasing this energy, just like a ‘Cork’.
We have two views of the same situation.
- Religious Mythology, Good vs Evil, Light vs Dark, Darkness, etc..
- The Scientific Explanation: Electromagnetic Anomalies, Exotic matter, Time Travelling Bunnies etc..
Both are correct and both are important in telling the story of Lost.
Scientifically, everything in the Universe is just a different form of Energy, all matter is a form of energy, anything in the real world is just a manifestation of God’s energy, including us. This energy can be used for Good or for Evil and can manifest itself in many forms, even in ways that cannot yet be explained, just read a little into modern particle physics and it kinda all makes perfect sense.
MIB is pure energy but has chosen to use this pure energy for the darkside, (Just like the Force in Star wars was used for Good vs Evil) Jacob is also from the same source of energy but represents the pure energy in Good form, the Ying and Yang of existence, both necessary in life.
What we have now learned is that although this Evil energy needs to exist in the Universe, it can be contained, like a Cork.
The sea is containing MIB from escaping as he can’t travel through water and the Island is acting like a Cork keeping him at bay, for now. So what happens when you remove the Cork, well all the energy escapes, Good & Evil, is let loose among humanity in the real world and The Island/Cork Sinks!
LA X Ep.1 we see the sunken Island where the Cork has been removed and the Energy within the Island has escaped into the real world. This is not a good sign, which takes me back to my early theory that the ALT reality is showing us “The Eve of the Apocalypse” where Evil is free to roam.
Locke seems very different in the ALT reality, very MIB like don’t you think?
I think Locke in the ALT is MIB, he is still fLocke and this is the first time MIB has actually been seen in the real world or atleast ALT world.
I think wheelchair Locke in the ALT, is THE DEVIL, EVIL INCARNATE released into the real world and the ALT will end in an Apocalypse.
I have visions of Smokey swirling around the planet engulfing and destroying whole cities, bringing out the worst in Man until all of humanity is destroyed and then MIB can finally go home.
Where is home for MIB? Back to the cosmos from where he came, back into the darkness of space, back to the alien dark evil world from where he came, oh yes I am not going to drop my Extra Terrestrial theory just yet, actually I think my theory has been strengthened a lot after this episode.
Jacob is from the same source of energy as MIB, they are kind of one and the same but 2 opposite manifestations of this incredible energy source, Good & Bad, Ying & Yang, Black & White.
Electromagnetic energy & Exotic matter that Dharma were testing on can be used for Good or for Bad, as Jacob chose not to intervene with the humans directly, MIB is left to control the dark forces as he chooses but he is chained to the Island, so he has all this power but is trapped. The whole rivalry for hundreds if not thousands of years has been, MIB trying to get free to wreck havoc and Hell on Earth and Jacob is there to stop him with the help of humankind and selected candidates and try to prove MIB is actually wrong about humanity and hence change his ways, like that’s gonna happen right.
Lost is one of the best written, most intelligent, meaningful, intriguing and entertaining shows ever created in the history of television. And for those who insist otherwise, well, they can stick a ‘Cork’ in it.
