The Compass Paradox!
Richard Alpert gave Locke a compass, instructing him to give it back to him the next time Locke saw him. (“Because You Left. Ep.1”) When Locke time-shifted to 1954, he gave the compass to Richard in order to prove he was from the future. (“Jughead. Ep.3”) In 2007, The Man in Black posing as Locke told Richard to give the compass (originally given to him by Locke in 1954) to Locke, thereby creating a time loop. (“Follow the Leader. Ep.15”)
There is no compass. It is something of a self-contained temporal paradox, since the compass was never created in the first place.
Some things in Lost can never be explained, but they certainly make your brain ache. Brilliant twist.
