“Waaaaaay Before!”
In the opening scene, during the Time Flashes, we see the Awesome Taweret, long before the well was even built. How far back exactly? This appears to me to be another sort of time anomaly or time paradox similar to the compass!
Let me explain: The Orchid Well & the FDW was apparently built by MIB approx 0 AD - 50 AD with his Roman friends of Claudia that came around that time. Ok, so if the Losties on the surface can see Tawaret and the Well has not been built yet, when were they? Pre MIB found and built the well, therefore pre Frozen Donkey Wheel construction. Now can someone explain how Locke then turned the FDW in an apparent time flash that was before it was even built?
Is it simply another Time anomaly, does Spacetime change the nearer you are to the source? Or maybe those clever Egyptians built another Donkey Wheel there, long long before MIB or Jacob were even born? The underground cavern where the FDW was located has been there from the very beginning, before the well was built and there was more than just one way in to it. Maybe MIB based his idea on the original, maybe he reprogrammed the original wheel, Maybe he built the original wheel then flashed back to Egyptian times when he was testing it and decided to stick around?
Maybe there is more than one Wheel and one Well, maybe there is No Time There, maybe I think way too much into these little details.
We see Locke turn the wheel, the sound is different, the flash is different this time, Locke gets zapped to the Sahara desert while the Losties get zapped to 1974. New chapter begins, deep breath, the crazy head popping, nose bleeding, blindingly bright violent time shifts have stopped, for now.
